Pecel

Pecel is a traditional salad originated from island of Java. It is made from mixture of blanched vegetables such as spinach or morning glory, long bean, bean sprout, cucumber, basil, cassava leaves, whichever is easily obtainable, served with peanut sauce dressing. Pecel usually eaten with warm steamed rice and called Nasi Pecel or with lontong or ketupat (rice cake) and called Pecel Lontong.

The exact origin is still unknown however it is believed to be from Madiun or Ponorogo in East Java. There are a lot of variant of Pecel in Java, each region created its own version of Pecel. In West Java the variant of Pecel is called Gado-Gado. Pecel can be found in most areas in island of Java, from big cities to small villages, from restaurant to street food vendor even to women pecel seller travelling from place to place carrying all the pecel ingredients in woven basket on their back.
